Your interiors are known for their refined yet welcoming feel - how would you describe your overall styling philosophy?

"I would describe our overall style as classic contemporary, though how that balance plays out really depends on each client’s interpretation. Some clients lean more towards a contemporary feel, while others prefer a classical influence. For me, the most important thing is that every interior feels authentic to the people who live there, it should reflect their unique lifestyle, their routines, and the way they want their home to feel. That’s where true luxury lies: in creating a space that is both beautiful and completely personal."

Where do you tend to draw inspiration from when curating accessories and finishing touches for a space?

"When it comes to accessories and finishing touches, I always think in terms of layering rather than stand-alone pieces. I’m particularly drawn to accessories that are both functional and beautiful: photo frames, candles, trays, bowls or boxes in different textures in order to add subtle tonal depth. For example, in a kitchen we’ll select objects that are practical day-to-day, but elevated enough to also work as decorative styling pieces. That balance between function and refinement is key.”

You’ve recently introduced some new products in collaboration with Addison Ross - how do these pieces reflect your own design aesthetic?

“Our most recent collaboration with Addison Ross came directly from a real need I was seeing, not only from our clients but also from my Instagram community. People were constantly asking for pieces like salt and pepper mills that weren’t purely functional but also elevated in our design style. I wanted them to feel classic in character so they would sit beautifully in any kitchen, acting as a decorative accessory you’d actually want on display. Naturally, we incorporated antique brass, it’s a finish I return to again and again for the warmth and timelessness it brings. The colourways we’ve chosen mean you can seamlessly mix the mills to suit your own kitchen. We recently styled them in our Palace Street project and at The Peninsula, and our clients absolutely loved them, they definitely draw the eye and add that refined finishing touch.”

For someone looking to elevate their home with small changes, what are your go-to styling tips that make the biggest impact?

Simple Interior Design Tips

“That’s a great question, and one I’m asked often on Instagram. My first answer is always lighting, because it’s truly transformative. Get the lighting right and you can completely change the mood and atmosphere of a space. In our course, we dedicate full modules to lighting for each room, but as a quick overview, it’s important to think about how light interacts with surfaces. Does it bounce softly off the walls, wash across a feature cabinet, or highlight a piece of artwork you love? Lighting can elongate a hallway, create intimacy in a dining room, or turn a bedroom into a sanctuary, it’s one of the most powerful styling tools you have."

"Secondly, I’d suggest bringing nature indoors. It’s such an easy way to soften and elevate a room, whether with real plants or beautifully made faux arrangements like this one from Wild Wood London.

Coffee Table Styling & Everyday Details

Finally, I would say never underestimate the power of layering textures and displaying curated accessories. At Sophie Paterson Interiors, we always use tactile details to create depth and richness. On coffee tables, for example, I often use our Anthracite Shagreen Tray to group accessories together, it makes the display feel instantly more curated, and the Ecru Faux Shagreen Box is a staple for hiding away TV remotes and everyday clutter while keeping the scheme elegant and refined."

Which design details or pieces do you find yourself returning to time and again, both in your projects and in your own home?

That’s such a tricky question because I always try to design something unique for each project and each room, it keeps the spaces feeling special. Even in my own home, while the overall look is classic contemporary, I’ve made sure each room has its own character. The key is to create a common thread throughout the house without making every space feel identical.

Recently, I’ve been really enjoying incorporating our Loom Collection, both in my own home and in client projects. Just this week at home, I’ve added the Clasp Wall Console by my side entryway, it’s the perfect drop zone for keys when I come in from walking Pip, and it looks so elegant in the space. We also installed pieces from the collection at our Peninsula project, including the Reed Bedside Tables, which I also use in my own bedroom. They’re such a timeless design, beautifully detailed yet practical, with spacious drawers that are ideal for keeping all of my bedside essentials neatly tucked away.”
